Did You Know?
Did you know that nerves and excitement have the same symptoms? Rather than trying to make yourself calm down, try to shift your thinking to “I am excited!” To get you in the zone for feeling confident on video, read on for my three key confidence tips for video awesomeness.
Sometimes people shy away from video marketing because they feel too nervous to DO it – worrying about how they look and sound, panicing about the tech, not wanting to sound silly and get their words wrong.
And then there’s the fear – that noone will watch, that people WILL watch, that there might be unwelcome comments from morons with a keyboard.
So how can I move your from FEAR to FABULOUS? Follow these three strategies and let’s get you sharing your awesome business message on video to grow your people, profile and profit!
Passion, Purpose, Practice!
Start with how you feel about your business and the clients you are going to help! Be passionate about that message you need to share. Put yourself in the shoes of your clients – how are you going to help them. Think about the difference you are going to make to them with the content you create.
Passion about your audience and the message you have to share takes you out of your own head, and helps you connect with the people you are going to impact with your awesomeness. And it can make you feel excited instead of nervous!
Even if you don’t think you are awesome – you’re probably taking for granted the difference you actually make to people. So get passionate.
Don’t go live or press record without a clear idea about what you are going to SAY . What is the purpose of it? To answer a question, solve a problem, share a specific story?
Be specific – what is your introduction (not sure how to nail it? Check out this blog for some ideas)? What is your call to action at the end of your video so people know what you want them to do? Subscribe? Like the page? Comment on the video?
Write it on a post it note, or record it on a doc online, and GO.
I can’t tell you how many times I have said this – get used to the sound of your own voice! It makes a huge difference to your confidence, clarifies your message, and contains your videos into shorter snippets that are easier to edit and share. PS Don’t worry about editing – outsource it or check my simple tips out here.
Practice in the car, when you’re in the shower, when you’re in the supermarket checkout. Okay maybe not there, but you get the drift. Do it. It really works and can make you feel less anxious and more excited about your video.
Then practice with your phone – find the camera, press video and then the red button to record. See how you go – if you don’t know how check out my tips here.
Delete it and try again. Just practicing with your phone will make you feel less fearful of the tech, and you’ll start to see the difference in light, sound, sitting or standing, indoors or outside. This helps you choose your SPOT.

With the volume of video available to watch online and the competitive nature of our online businesses, we need to get video to platform fast and effectively. But how do we do that?
If you spend time creating your own videos, you’ll know they take some commitment. It’s not the same as writing a blog or social media post. So you want to get it right the first time. Here’s my tried and tested method for creating video FAST.
Have A Plan
Without a strategy, and a content plan, you can’t really create high impact videos fast.
Start with your strategy. What’s the outcome you need from your video marketing? Are you nurturing existing clients, raising your profile, adding value on LinkedIn to increase the number of connections?
This helps you know what you are going to create and means you are not going to waste time, money and energy creating content that doesn’t hit the mark. The last thing we want is to have to re-record or delete and start again.
You need a content plan that is solid and ready to go. One you have filled with what your clients need from you. Not sure what that is? Ask them! Your plan should include how you’re going to answer their questions and fix and solve their problems through your videos.
Video Recording Set Up
Decide where you are going to record most of your content. So you don’t have to rethink where to stand, where to look, where you’re going to put your tripod, what light you need, whether you need to use a microphone, what background is behind you, etc.
All of those things you can have in place regularly so when you’re ready to record, you don’t have to create that space every single time. It will save you loads of time to have it setup all the time or at least, know how and where to set it up when you’re ready to go.
Know what you’re going to say
The first time you say your video content shouldn’t be when you press record or go live.
Spend some time creating key points that you can rehearse, practice and get ready to create those videos. If you don’t do this, that’s the stuff that makes you have to edit, and you don’t want to, believe me. The less editing the better.
After you’ve practiced what you’re going to say, you’ve heard your voice, you know what to say, and away you go.
Press record. Record your video and do yourself a huge favour by splitting your introduction, the body of your content and your call to action into three very clear pieces of video footage. Whether that means you just pause between each one and smile and breathe for a second or two, or whether you stop the camera and start recording again is completely up to you and depends on your skills in editing.
Creating video content fast happens when you are totally in the moment, and you know exactly what you’re going to say and what your clients need from you.
There’s a lot of power in talking about the topics that you feel intimately knowledgeable about, the stuff that when people ask you, you could talk about it for hours and hours without having to look at any notes whatsoever.
Stick to the topics that make you feel empowered and strong and like the expert you are, and your videos will be faster and faster to create.
Keep Your Videos Short
Statistics say that videos under 2 mins retain more audience, plus on Instagram and twitter they need to be under 1 minute anway. So keep your message clear, your videos short, and you’ll have a library in no time.
As for Facebook live – you need to give Facebook time to notify people that you are live, plus give your audience a chance to notice the notification and click to your post. 10 minutes gives you enough time to cover your topic and have some eyeballs watching.
Be somewhere with fast internet
When you’re done with your video creation, it’s time to upload it to your computer for a spot of editing. You need fast wifi or good internet connection. A two minute video can take a matter of seconds, versus 20-30 minutes with slow connection – ain’t no-one got time for that!
Same goes to uploading to youtube if you’re going to get captions files created – but more about that in another blog.
Get them uploaded as fast as you can with mobile data or strong wifi connection.
Editing Like a Pro – or Not
Some people are put off using video to market their business because they don’t know how to edit them, and don’t want to learn!
I taught myself to edit over the last two years, but there are times when you’re best to find a professional editor!
If you’re going to diy your videos and editing, I recommend you watch this short video, where I share how I follow a simple template each time, so I don’t have to rethink it. And it’s fast and simple to do each time.
I don’t bother with a fancy logo animation, as that’s five seconds longer you need people to watch before you get to the content…BUT, it you have your heart set on it, this is something you can also outsource. (If you’re not sure how, shoot me a message or comment and I can put you in touch with some editors).

Get To Know Your Phone
Get used to the function on your smartphone – gifs, video collage, slow-mo, timelapse. They all have their place and you can practice with them to see which ones work in your business for the type of content you want to create.
Check out the settings on your phone then play around to see what looks good and could be used in different ways.
Find the camera lens
You’ll likely be using the forward facing camera so you can see yourself on the screen.
But rather than gazing at yourself and fiddling with your hair like I do, looking at the lens makes it feel way more like a conversation. You look more professional, and you can’t really see yourself so it’s better for your confidence too!
Having the phone up at eye level feels like we are speaking to one another, rather than potentially seeing up your nose (which incidentally adds loads of kilos and a double chin to even the skinniest of people).
Give it a try it makes a huge difference
And don’t forget to LOOK at the lens, and have it at eye level – it really does make a difference to the quality of your videos.
Shine a Light
Can I see you? Check the light – it’s super important when you consider that 85% of videos are watched without sound on Facebook.
If I can’t see you because the light is poor, or behind you and you look like a whistle blower on A Current Affair, then I am most likely to scroll past without a second thought.
Use natural light on your lovely face, or even a desklamp. If you want to purchase some they range in price and size, from selfie lights on your phone to LED lights used by the professionals
Make sure your message is clear – don’t waffle, or ramble, or talk about stuff that doesn’t relate to the point – you have about 7 seconds to make me stick around and watch so use it wisely! Not sure what to say? This blog will help.
Get to the point – if that’s not your strong point – practice! Record a few times and delete them til you get it more succinct. People don’t have the time to watch when there’s no point.
Just write a few key words and talk about them – a word for word script is for an actor and voice over professional!
You are talking about your OWN business. Own it!
What’s behind you?
Make sure you’re not sharing too much stuff that’s not related to your business
Kids’ artwork on the fridge, crap on your messy bookshelf, undies on a clothes airier (true story, not mine!)
Here’s my set up for standing videos (usually the pre-recorded ones you see I record standing):
You could invest in a backdrop like mine.
It was an investment, but I am oh so glad I bought it, as it makes it a no brainer when I am setting up to go live, jump on a skype call, record a video and more. But you could equally set up with a nice bookshelf with branded colour items on it, a pot plant etc.
Step By Step
So once you have set up with your equipment – it’s time to open your camera, click video, then press record – use a tripod so your phone stays still, follow the advice above, and keep your videos short.
Videos under 2 mins long get the best response across social media.
And as for Facebook Live – that depends on your topic, and your audience. I tend to keep mine around 10 mins, so it’s not too long for people to watch later, and gives Facebook time to build an audience for me – the Goldilocks of live video length!! Not too long, not to short, but JUUUST RIGHT.

- If you feel you need to edit the video, to make the start and end a bit more gorgeous – then upload the file to your computer (I never edit on my phone – but that’s me. You can find loads of editing apps in the app store

I work with women regularly who are afraid. They are experts in their field. They are loving generous people, but they are afraid.
Too scared to share their unique business message and stories on video because of the insidious fear of criticism.
You might have met it before – the voice in your head that says “what if so and so sees this video online and criticises how I look or what I say” or “I am going to look stupid doing this” or worse.
And it can stop you in your tracks. Then we all miss out on you!
The Fear Of Criticism
The fear of criticism is so strong that it makes people stop living a joyful life. It can make us choose or make decisions that are not the right ones for us and our families. It can keep us ‘playing small’ in our businesses. I should know.
That was me for ages.
According to Napoleon Hill, in his legendary classic Think and Grow Rich:
‘the fear of criticism robs people of their initiative, destroys their power of imagination, Iimits their individuality, and takes away their self-reliance’.
Criticism makes us feel unworthy. Like we are not enough, we don’t deserve to have success. We are never going to be as good as someone else.
And where I see this most in my business is when clients won’t share their message on video because they are so worried what people will think of them. It stops them being more visible in their business, promoting their fantastic service, robs potential clients of their great work.
How can we stop letting it get to us?
That comment from the ex- that makes us cringe. Someone saying something about our parenting, someone commenting on our figure or choice of where we spend our money (yes it seems people think they have a right to comment and criticise pretty much anything).
I’ve been criticised all my life for being too loud, too honest, too opinionated. I have been called too short, too much, too fat, a showoff, “just a mum”.
But it’s an imagined threat. Someone else’s criticism can’t physically hurt us. It’s shitty I agree, shitty of someone to feel so right that they can criticise and be negative about us.
But logically we know it’s not the same as being chased by a tiger or punched in the arm.
And yet we let the thoughts happen and we experience that fear like it’s real. And we want to run away and watch Netflix and eat chocolate and avoid doing the thing.
It’s hard to block out – but allowing the fear to make us choose not to do things is just that – a choice. Even if we know that this or that person being the dick that they are will have an opinion doesn’t mean we have to accept it, listen to our mind tick over, let it become a living breathing thing.
We can reframe this. It starts with YOU. Learning to smash that internal judge is the first step to managing when you are worried about other’s opinions, or actually DO receive criticism and have to deal with it.
Remember what confidence feels like
Remember that time you felt really confident? It could have been in your business, or life (that you were going to nail that deadline, help that client regain their financial success, get that contract, win that game of tennis, lease that house, squash that spider).
Remember that feeling. No matter how fleeting. Think about it now and remember where in your body you felt it. Warm kind of feeling in your tummy? In your chest? A warm radiating kind of heat in the middle of your chest, perhaps it makes you smile, perhaps you feel it like a lack of tightness in your head or chest or tummy.
Then do the senses exercise – what were five things you can see in that picture along with your wonderful self confidence? What were two things you could hear? What is something you could smell? Your perfume, hairspray even??
Choose NOT to let the criticism take hold
Catch yourself in the thought:
When a thought like “what will they say if they see me online” or “all the young beautiful people will laugh at me, or ignore me” my logical brain offers this: I don’t care and I won’t know anyway. What can someone else opinion really do to me anyway, when the 99.9% are cheering me on?
The world needs my message and I say it with confidence
Keep saying it, and allowing the confident feels, whatever they were, to go with it.
You’ll find it starts to become your default position, any time a fearful thought pops up – remind yourself again, Stop the pattern of thought that has you paralysed and feeling teary, or shallow breathing. It has totally worked for me in the last 18 months.
Flex that confidence muscle. Practice it daily
Here’s a great example:
A client I was creating videos with was constantly worried about what her ex- had to say about her business. About her. And he does because he’s an arsehat. So she said the fearful thought out loud.
What if he sees this video and hears me talking about making a profit in my business?
Then she realised that she has every right to make a profit, and this has nothing to do with him. That he has no power over her and how she chooses to run her business. Then she took a breath and moved on with the video shoot.
That same day she landed an exclusive supplier contract. She was feeling confident and happy when she left the office that day – what if she had given into that fear of criticism – she may have in the past, and not left the house because she felt so hideous. And missed out on a contract she dearly wanted.
You will never please everyone. Ever.
Try the worst case scenario technique
What’s the worst thing that could happen if people watch me on video and think I am fat and ugly? (PS You’re NOT)
Well I guess they won’t watch, or the might make a negative comment on my Facebook page (which I can delete and block them if I feel like it afterwards), they might tell someone else (and I won’t know about it), or they might tell someone who I do know who will stick up for me, and overall I actually don’t care. And if I am feeling fat then I will do something about it.
Marie Forleo suggests writing out all the potential criticism you think you’re going to get. Any comment you imagine you might get that you would find hurtful. Her theory is that once you get it all out in the open, on paper or on an online note pad, that is stops being as hurtful or powerful over you.
I’d like to take that a step further and say that I think you should write down or journal the person you want to be on video
I am a confident marketing consultant who creates award winning advertising campaigns for my clients. This confidence is catching – if you act like you are the you will be.
The criticism matrix
I like to make sense of stuff when it’s truly bothering me, so I did some digging and found this fantastic graphic from Ann Friedman: http://www.annfriedman.com/disapprovalmatrix. It’s her take on authors coping with feedback/criticism.
Here’s my take on it:
The people on the left know us, those on the right don’t. And up the top are the people who like us/care about us, and down the bottom, not so much!
Cheerleaders We all have them, the people we turn to for support, to vent, to share or brainstorm ideas. The ones who share our content and leave comments when we ask them to. These gems of the online world know us and love us. Let’s EMBRACE those cheerleaders and build a solid bunch of them around us.
Clients. These are the peeps who know the field you are creating stuff in, and if they have an opinion (and clients will) then you need to listen to it. You are always going to get that sort of feedback as it’s part of the job. So expect it, ACCEPT it, breath deeply and know it’s almost never as bad as we anticipate
Frenemies – ah now these are the people we worry about the most – they might know us, but they don’t GET it. They don’t know how to behave themselves online (and in fact sometimes they are even family!) The shitty opinion we didn’t ask for, the stuff that’s not even necessarily related to the content, just a chance to take a potshot.
As simple as pointing out a typo on a Facebook post (my absolute pet hate, the comment not the typo) to full blown unhelpful comments. We get to choose – either EDUCATE them, or block/exclude/MANAGE and otherwise accept them
Haters – -don’t know you nor like you. Dickheads who gain some weird enjoyment from saying things online without any substance and with nothing more than a keyboard and a bad attitude ===>>IGNORE

You’ve started a business, you think it’s pretty awesome. You feel as excited as a teenager whose boyfriend has a car. But when someone says ‘what do you do?’ you seem stuck for words. Or you ramble and sound either apologetic or simply the same as everyone else.
How can you easily answer the question ‘What do YOU do?
Without the clarity to give the answer to that question, and owning those words, your video content will not hit the mark.
This clarity also has a huge benefit to your social media generally, your networking, even guest speaking.
Here’s five ways to clarifying what you actually DO when someone asks you that question so your videos are clear and to the point, and you feel bloody amazing.
Speak it out
If you imagine we are having a conversation, and we have around two minutes each, what are you going to tell me? Set and timer and give it a go. It really works. You’ll find you get on a roll, the words start to flow and you’ll find some real gems in there.
I recommend you record this one so you can hear those words back and pick the ones you really feel match your personality, brand, business.
Go back to your about pages
What did you write on your website? How about your social media profiles? You wrote those words for a reason, so go back now and read them outloud. Do they fit? Change them up, or use as is. They might just need a little refuelling to bring them up to scratch.
Tell a story
What if you didn’t say “”I am a wellness coach” or “I am a whatever”?
How about we tell a story?
I’ve been doing this in my workshops as my introduction, so here’s mine as an example:
What do you do Jenny?
It all started with the contract that ended all contracts. A corporate L&D consulting role on a major change project 3.5 years ago. A 25 year career brought to an end. Spending time with more arseholes than I had ever met in one place at a time. A whole colony of arseholes.
The money was awesome of course, loads of cash coming in. But soleless horrible humans on the project, and full time hours, had a huge impact on me and the three teenagers I had to raise alone, and I was struggling. So all round a pretty shitty time. And I thought never again. Ever.
I left that corporate gig and I retreated to my bed. I decided I just wanted to take it easy, do something I found fun and have a break. I took up copywriting, and I was pretty good at it, got a few good gigs and the money was flowing again. BUT, there was that thing in the back of my mind that ‘this is not you, you can do more than this, help more people, live bigger…’
And I realised how desperately I missed being with an awesome bunch of people, delivering programs that made a difference, affected change in them. I’d been grieving the loss of my L&D career, but realized I wanted desperately to own that expertise. Built over almost 25 years, I wanted very much to have it back and share it with others. But not like the old days, this time with people also building their business. Perhaps struggling with confidence to get their mesage out there. Confidence I can share and teach.
I knew what I wanted to do, and it was super powerful and energizing.
So after a 25 year career as an L&D Consultant, creating audience-focused programs, and powerful presentations to develop people, I bring the system and process needed to make video marketing effortless, simple and NOT scary for my clients.

Run it by a business buddy
Call a business buddy and ask them to listen to you for 2 minutes – see how they react to your core messages. Do they think you are living that message? Do they feel the way you’d like a prospective client to feel? Change it up if you need to, even send it to them as a document first then give them a call (way more powerful to say it than just write it).
Do a free writing/speaking activity
This is the equivalent of curing writers block. If you honestly can’t decide what to say, just speak into your voice recorder, google docs to record your words in text, or even a video.
Start speaking and keep going until you start getting to the nitty gritty of what it is you do and WHY (have you seen Simon Sinek’s Ted Talk on this? It’s definitely worth a look).

Are you ready to be a video superstar? Or would you still rather poke yourself in the eye with a stick? Being the MacGyver of video confidence means you use what’s at your disposal to solve a problem. You get inventive to get yourself out of your current situation (for him usually one of life and death, thank goodness we’re only talking about videos), and into one where you are front and centre representing your awesome brand.
Here are my top tips for conquering those nerves and feeling fabulous about how you look and sound on camera, so you can enjoy superstar video confidence.
I regularly ask in business groups ‘what’s stopping you?’ What pops into your head that split second before you decide that, no, today is not the day for videos? I can’t go live today because… I have asked this question of thousands of female entrepreneurs, and the responses are always pretty similar. We can’t stand the way we look and sound on video, we don’t know how to do it well, and we are not sure what we would say anyway. It might be one or more of these factors that’s stopping you.
Because no-one deserve sweaty palms, and we all deserve to feel fantastic and grow our people, profile and profit!
The Audience Is Key
I’ll let you in on a secret – no amount of fancy tech or gadgets will make up for poor messaging in your videos. Once you’ve nailed your message, both for your business and individual videos, the rest is easy to learn. Loads of people have jumped on the video band wagon without a thought to what they really want and need to say, and who they are saying it to. You on the other hand are going to focus on what’s right in front of you.
If you don’t know who you are talking to how will you know what to say?
The benefit to being audience focused don’t stop there. Focusing your energy and vibes outwardly to your audience is a great way to cure nerves as well. You can’t be thinking about yourself when you are truly audience focused.
So give some thought to who you want to serve? What do they need from you? What are their common questions and concerns? This will set you up with a little content plan
Plan Your Video Content
You aren’t an actor learning lines, you’re an expert in your field and your video content will show it. But what are you actually going to SAY? What would a kickass female MacGyver do? OWN your expertise! Stop hiding what you are truly good at under your handbags. Rely on it, use it, share it. It will bring you more confidence than you know.
I know it can be scary, but spending some time deciding on the outcome you’re looking for will pay dividends. Go back to the ideas you wrote down in the last section and start planning them. Pick one of the ideas and try it on for size. Is it something you can say without any effort? Do the words flow? Then do that one first.
Planning each video is as simple as writing a few dot points that you want to say, and having a video title that describes what it’s all about.
Use Your Voice
Getting used to the sound of your own voice is critical to video confidence. No-one likes how they sound. I promise. BBC Future shared a video that explains it a little more, but essentially we hear it differently as we speak compared to hearing it back. And the cringe is real.
But it’s your best tool and it’s free. You get used to it – we’ve been listening to you for ages and haven’t run screaming for the hills or put noise cancelling headphones on, so don’t sweat it.
Saying your video intro and key points out loud is super important for sounding conversational, and to the confidence in your delivery. You don’t need a teleprompter. This is your message, your business. And you can tell when someone is relying on reading the notes on a screen just off camera. If you’re not media trained I wouldn’t recommend it.
So, back to your voice. If you don’t know what to say, start with your voice recorder on your phone. This little tool is easy to use and free. Say your introduction – now play it back – did it sound authentic, which words if any did you stumble over? Are there important words you want to include and you forgot to say them?
Write down what you want to say, or just start speaking, whichever floats your boat, then do it again, and again, and again if you have to until you feel 80% okay with it, then move on.
Prepare Your Environment
Don’t wing it. Walking the dog and going live when you’re juggling a coffee and the dog lead is not the prime time to go live or record a video. Set up some space in your office. A chair, a neutral coloured wall, a pot plant, maybe a shelf with some branded colours on it. Stuff you already have! This way you don’t have to think about it every time.
Shed some light on your lovely face, make sure you know where to look at your smartphone so you’re looking at the lens of the camera, and away you go. Bonus points to having the phone at eye level so it feels even more like we’re having a conversation.
You’ll look better on camera, and you’ll feel great about the content you create.
Don’t stress over the details. Just choose and outfit you feel good in (remember most of the time we only see chest up), whack on a bit of lippy and away you go. If you like spending time getting ready with hair and makeup, then do it. If you don’t, then don’t. Be yourself.
Breath through any nerves, and start speaking. Just starting will help your confidence. I promise. A standard introduction helps enormously for this. Need more confidence tips for presenting? Read more about it here
