Three no nonsense tips for curing writer’s block when your brain is empty
So you can go from this:
You stare at the screen, it is blank like your brain…empty of ideas or a clue where to start. Write a blog they said, just write about yourself, or anything really, it will be easy they said. You even have the heading ready to go, it came to you in the middle of the night, inspiration strikes at weird times doesn’t it, I wonder what I should get for tea tonight, oh and don’t forget it’s Halloween this weekend and Ollie needs to dress as a zombie so I should ask someone if they have a mask I can borrow…oh hang on, I am supposed to be writing…yep okay, got it…writing something…anything
So we have all been there, you know you had something to say when you first came up with the idea for the blog. Now you have an hour dedicated to getting that ticked off your to-do list and you are in front of the blinking cursor…but what to do now?
Tip one – breathe
It also works to add oxygen to the brain when you are unclear what to write and need better concentration.
Just do it
I am supposed to be writing right now, right nownownow I don’t know what to write I am a busy person why is it taking so long maybe I should set a timer and give myself a deadline stupid birds are so loud here all i can here are birds and a timer going off on the stove noisey house working from home i love my desk and my ipad blah blah blah…
Eventually something comes out and you can use it. Seriously. In that last string I stumbled across the set a timer and give myself a deadline. That works for me, so maybe it would work for my audience too and I can write about that?

Map it out
Thirdly, this technique is more mind-mappy, more interconnecting brain network style and goes like this: choose a word, any word, such as ‘deadline’.
Then for the next 90 seconds write as many words that pop into head about that topic…timer, productivity, pressure, results, achievement, time management, customer service, organisation and so on and so forth until you have a bunch of words that could form the nucleous of your blog…watch this space for a blog about using imposed deadlines as a way to improve your customer service!
